  1. This is a great blog, Sakura. I came across your post on KevinMD.com and saw your link to this. I too am studying for the MCAT but am a year away from my test date. I've taken the Biology & GenChem classes and 1 semester each of the Physics and OChem. I'm now going back over the Biology sections using Exam Krackers study guide. I'm going to follow along with your progress and review the notes you add here.

Good luck to you! I admire your determination and organization. You are just the type of person that will make a great surgeon.

  2. Thanks very much Chris,
If you have time let me know how you do on your pretests, I'll follow along with your progress too. It will definitively help me stay on track knowing people are reviewing along with me. One thing that I have noticed about the MCAT (based on the pretests) is that, all the times I remember college professors really caring about (and stressing) a topic like steric hindrance in OChem, or Le' Chatelier's principle in GenChem, or when they give you a tip on how you don't even have to calculate to solve a physics problem because the answer must be negative due to the concepts and only one answer is negative... those are the type of problems the MCAT specifically has more of, as if in a tribute to what professors care most about. The MCAT seems to always test to see if you know how much volume is in 1 mol of gas at standard pressure and temperature (22.4 L). Also, there are a lot of easy traps: the sign needs to be reversed, because the reverse reaction is given... I think they try to trick you half the time, so the other half you question the straightforward answer. For the reading section, the MCAT tests vocabulary by shifting the words in the questions to synonyms so that you can't visually scan for the same words. One example: the passage said grotesque, and the question said not handsome. I jumped from a 10 to a 12 in the reading section, simply by noticing that the words in the answer are very often in close physical proximity to the words in the question. When two of the answers seem right, the one that is referred to in the passage closer to the words in the passage that match the question, is almost always the correct answer (in the type of question that asks "according to the passage blah blah blah."). I recommend that you take the free pretest the AAMC offers, since you may not know your own strengths. I always thought I would be worse in physics and better in biology, but I'm near dead even actually. Thanks again for your support. Good luck to you also Chris.

  3. Hey Sakura Thanks for the great review sections for the biology section. My friend is studying for the MCAT and I am studying for the DAT and we teach each other a subsection for biology and I have been using your reviews to help me with my little lectures that I give her as well as look at when she is teaching me something :P. Many thanks

    1. Thanks for visiting the site,
I'm so glad the reviews are helping. I just began adding an audio lecture hosted by SoundCloud, with matching notes for visual learners. I'm starting with physics, but should be adding chemistry and biology soon. All the lectures and notes will have quizzes with solutions and everything will be on the Learning Materials Page. Good luck on your DAT and thank your for your support.

  4. Hi Sakura! I love your reviews! Keep them up. Just curious when the organic chem will be up? Your reviews are amazing, I just need help on that organic chem! Thanks and Goodluck!
